ITIL v5 isn’t just an update; it’s a mindset shift!

Have you ever looked at a software update and thought, "Oh great, another button has moved," only to realize the entire engine under the hood has been replaced?

A digital illustration showing a professional stepping across a glowing digital bridge from an old, grey platform labeled "SERVICE MANAGEMENT" toward a vibrant, expansive network labeled "PRODUCT ECOSYSTEMS." Text reads: "ITIL v5: THE ECOSYSTEM SHIFT."

That is exactly how I feel about the release of ITIL® Foundation (Version 5). While the industry is still buzzing from the shift to ITIL 4, this new evolution (officially launched in February 2026) feels like the moment the framework finally caught up to the "Digital-First" reality we’ve been living in.

From Managing Services to Cultivating Ecosystems

What strikes me most about ITIL v5 is the fundamental shift in perspective. We are moving away from the traditional idea of "managing services" as isolated deliverables. Instead, we are now tasked with cultivating ecosystems.

In the old days (which, let’s be honest, was only a few years ago), we focused on the "Service Value System." It was a great step forward. But ITIL v5 takes it further by acknowledging that in an AI-driven, platform-centric world, a service isn't just something you "provide"—it is a living part of a larger, interconnected digital product.

Why This is a "Mindset Shift"

If you’re looking into the New ITIL Foundation Bridge or the full V5 certification, here is the "vibe shift" you need to prepare for:

  • The Rise of "Digital Product & Service Management" (DPSM): We aren't just IT people anymore; we are product owners. ITIL v5 bridges the gap between development, operations, and business strategy by treating products and services as a unified lifecycle.

  • An infographic illustrating the ITIL v5 Unified Digital Product & Service Lifecycle as a continuous, looping ecosystem, highlighting interactions with AI governance and complexity thinking.

  • AI-Native, Not "AI-Added": Previous versions treated AI as a "trend." Version 5 is AI-native. It assumes AI is already part of your decision-making and provides a specific "AI Governance" framework to keep it ethical and accountable.

  • Experience Over Efficiency: In v5, "Value" isn't just about uptime or meeting an SLA. It's about the Digital Experience (DX). If the system is up but the user is frustrated, you haven't delivered value.

  • Complexity Thinking: The framework has finally abandoned the idea that everything can be "standardized." It introduces Complexity Thinking, helping us adapt our responses whether we are in a stable, complex, or even chaotic environment.

The "Bridge" to the Future

For those of us already certified in ITIL 4, the Foundation Bridge (Version 5) is the golden ticket. It’s designed specifically to help us unlearn the "siloed" habits of the past and embrace this ecosystem-based future.

"Sustainability and Digital Experience (DX) now share equal footing with utility and warranty. They aren't extras; they are foundational."

Final Thoughts

ITIL v5 is asking us to stop acting like mechanics fixing a machine and start acting like gardeners tending to a landscape. It’s about flow, interconnectedness, and the human-centricity of Industry 5.0.

If you’re still thinking in terms of "tickets" and "incidents," it’s time to look at the bridge. The ecosystem is waiting.
